What Is Goin’ On

I have been on “vacation” for 3 days now, and I am pretty happy with what I have accomplished… sort of.

Monday had me going downtown with Paul and Perrone to pick up a Wah-Wah pedal for my guitar. That thing is SO MUCH fun to play with. The only thing that sucked about Monday was that I didn’t get any coding done. I promised myself that I would program every day this week, so I vowed to make it up the next day.

Tuesday morning I had to play catchup with my coding. So I decided to build a mobile interface for writing new blog posts to my website. It took about an hour or so to put together and test, but at the end of it all I was successfully able to post a new entry to my blog via my cellphone. Very exciting.

I took a break for lunch, and then went to Infonec with Perrone to buy the parts I needed for the computer I am building my mom for Christmas. When I got back, I had to get started on my coding quota for the day. So keeping with the ‘mobile’ theme, I created the mobile version of my blog. So now the 5 most recent posts can be previewed and read using a mobile phone browser. I am going to try to add some extra functionality to this in the future… not sure exactly what or how yet however.

My coding project for today consisted of writing the equivalent of Query Analyzer for MySQL. Well, a considerably lower powered version. Essentially, I am now able to write SELECT queries (I limited it to select because I don’t want to be able to drop a database using this thing… it is using the admin account) without having to log into my website control panel and launching phpmyadmin. After I did that, I broke for lunch. Then I proceeded with assembling the computer that I purchased parts for yesterday.

It is a pretty slick system (AMD Athlon 64 3200+). I launched the 64 bit version of the Ubuntu 6.10 LiveCD and it ran without any problems. I’m going to install the 64 bit version of Vista from MSDN just to test it out before setting it up with Windows XP and all the other software my mom uses.

That leaves tomorrow and friday open for some mini coding projects. I’ve got 2 things lined up that I think I want to work one… one being the continuation of a project I still don’t want to talk about. And the other being an Amazon Webservice experiment… I want to build an app that checks a shopping cart of items against both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca to see which items should be purchased at which store to get the best deal. I usually do this manually, and sometimes I get a better deal on Amazon.com and sometimes at Amazon.ca (mostly with items that .com carries, but .ca has to order as an ‘IMPORT’ which drives up the price).

So, I’ll try to write again on friday to give an update on these two things… or sooner if I actually complete one of them.
